Bangkok Baseball Softball Association (BBSA) has organized baseball/softball play for the past 58 years in Bangkok. There are leagues for boys and girls ages 4 yrs – 18 yrs.

Registration is open from October 1st until November 3rd.  We must register players now so we have time to hold player assessments, form teams and order player uniforms before play begins.

Current fees per player are THB 3,600.  Registration fees will increase to THB 4,100 on November 3rd so be sure to register before that date.

You can make your payment at the Community Activity Office (CAO) or pay by Thai bank wire transfer.  Cash, credit cards and Thai baht checks are accepted for payment at the CAO office.  The CAO Office is open Monday – Friday, 7:00AM to 11:00AM and 12:00PM to 3:00PM.

Player assessment will be held on Sunday November 4th at the ISB fields.  All players are strongly encouraged to attend their assessment sessions to allow the coaches to create fair and balanced teams. See the attached assessment schedule.

Opening Day for Baseball/ Softball is on Saturday, Nov 17th.

All games are played on Friday evenings and Saturdays at ISB. Games will continue every weekend until the league championships the weekend of February 22nd/23rd  There will be no games during the winter break at ISB but we will continue play on Saturday, January 5th 2019.  The game schedule will be published once we know how many players are registered.

Practices will begin the week of Nov 5th.

All teams will practice once per week during the season as a weekly practice is important to skills development and to learn the fundamentals of teamwork, etc.  We have arranged an optional Sunday practice at NIST.  Parents will have to pay THB 1,000 for the season for this practice because NIST charges for field usage.

On the registration form you will also have an opportunity to volunteer to be a coach, assistant coach or team parent.

Please consider helping out with your child’s team in some way.  The kids really love having their parents helping out with their team and you will have a great time.  No previous baseball experience is necessary.

BBSA has purchased a limited number of fielding gloves for players who need them.  These will be sold on our assessment day.

Please go to www.isb.ac.th/community-baseball for more information and the register link and please visit our Facebook page.

If you have any questions, please contact Phil Walther at phil@bangkokbaseball.org

ISB Health Clinic: Dengue Fever

$

0

There have been recent reports that Thailand is experiencing the worst outbreak of Dengue Fever for 2 decades with a number of fatalities already this year. So far the Health Clinic has been informed of 1 case of Dengue Fever in a student for the 2018/19 school year.

Please be Dengue aware and employ mosquito avoidance measure to decrease the chance of you and your family getting infected.

Dengue fever is an infection caused by dengue viruses (4 different types). It is common with an estimated 100 million people infected with the virus every year. Dengue virus is transmitted by a bite from infected mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus).

Symptoms:

Symptoms usually start 3 to 14 days (usually 4 to 7 days) after the mosquito bite.

The disease has a sudden onset and symptoms may include:

  • fever for 3 to 7 days
  • intense headache and pain behind the eyes
  • muscle and joint pain
  • loss of appetite
  • vomiting and diarrhoea
  • skin rash
  • bleeding, usually from the nose or gums.

Recovery is sometimes associated with prolonged fatigue and depression.

Repeated episodes of dengue fever may result in excessive bleeding and shock but, with appropriate treatment, are rarely fatal.

Diagnosis of dengue fever is made by clinical presentation and a blood test.

Spread:

A mosquito becomes infected if it bites an infected person while the fever is present (an average period of about 3 to 5 days).

After biting an infected person it takes 4 to 10 days before the mosquito can infect other people. The mosquito remains infective for life.

Dengue fever is not directly spread from person-to-person. It can be spread by person-mosquito-person spread.

Treatment:

There is no specific antiviral treatment available.

General recommendations include controlling fever and pain with paracetamol/acetaminophen rather than aspirin/Ibuprofen/Naproxen (may promote bleeding), and increasing fluid intake. Aspirin should not be given to children under 12 years of age unless specifically recommended by a doctor.

Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever is a complication of Dengue Fever in some people. It usually presents as the fever is subsiding.

Return IMMEDIATELY to see a doctor if any of the following warning signs appear:

  • Severe abdominal pain or persistent vomiting
  • Red spots or patches on the skin
  • Bleeding from nose or gums
  • Vomiting blood
  • Black, tarry stools
  • Drowsiness or irritability
  • Pale, cold, or clammy skin
  • Difficulty breathing

Prevention

  • Exclusion from school or work is usually not necessary but people experiencing fever from dengue infection should not be in an environment where they may be bitten by mosquitoes. If this is not possible they should stay at home until they have no fever and are therefore no longer infectious (usually 3 to 5 days).
  • A vaccine is being developed against Dengue Fever. It provides a varying level of immunity to the 4 different strains. It has been approved for use in some countries in 2016. It is currently not available for use in Thailand (and there is no information available about when it will be available). It is expected that it will only be available to people who have previously had Dengue Fever when it released (due to the fact there will be limited supply and you get sicker with Dengue Fever with subsequent infections)
  • Personal protection and the environmental management of mosquitoes are important in preventing illness.
  • Prevent access of mosquitoes to an infected person with a fever.

ISB is committed to your child’s overall development, both educationally and health related. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact your healthcare provider or the ISB Health Clinic (nurse@isb.ac.th).

ISB Health Clinic: Water Safety

$
0
0

In Thailand there are many water hazards we need to be careful about, including beaches, swimming pools, rivers, klongs, lakes, swamps and water parks. Every year we should review water safety and what we can do to prevent injuries and fatalities.

General Guidelines:

  • Never swim alone and always have adult supervision when children are swimming.
  • Always know the depth of the water you are entering. Especially if you are diving.
  • Always stay at a safe depth for your swimming ability.
  • Use age/ability appropriate flotation devices if required but remember that these are not life saving devices and do not replace close adult supervision.
  • Avoid swimming for 30 minutes following a meal. Do not eat or chew gum when swimming (due to the risk of choking).
  • Avoid repeated prolonged underwater swimming. Do not hyperventilate prior to underwater swimming. This is to decrease the chance of Shallow Water Blackout. This is a problem that tends to occur in competent swimmers trying to improve performance, children trying to swim laps under water and in spearfishermen and freedivers.
  • If possible swim where there is a lifeguard on duty. Be aware that lifeguards at pools may not manage behaviour and be as vigilant as lifeguards in other countries. A lifeguard is not a substitute for close adult supervision.
  • As a supervising adult consider doing a CPR course.
  • Never swim in the dark.
  • Never swim if you have been consuming alcohol or any other drug that may affect your concentration.
  • Never swim when there is thunder or lightening in the area.
  • Ensure you and your child can swim. Get swim lessons if required.
  • Be aware of the risk of sunburn and heat illness. Ensure use of sunscreen and rash guards and drink plenty of water.

Swimming Pools:

  • If possible enclose pool with fences and self closing gates.
  • Never run around pools
  • Never push someone into a pool and ensure when jumping in there is nobody close by.
  • Consider wearing goggles as some pools may not be as clean as they should be.

Lakes/Rivers/Ponds:

  • Make sure you know the currents in the water you are swimming in.
  • If possible ensure the waterways are clean and free of toxins or certain bacteria or amoeba.
  • Consider the use of water shoes to protect feet from sharp rocks and broken glass.
  • Be aware of potential snags at the bottom of rivers and if caught pull leg slowly out (do not pull quickly as the increases the risk of getting caught).
  • If on boats always wear life jackets.

Beaches:

  • Be aware of currents and rips. Ensure all swimmers know what to do if caught in rip (swim diagonally out with the rip…..never swim against it).
  • Understand flags on beach
    • Red and yellow flag: lifeguard on duty. Swim between the flags
    • Black and white flag: Surfboard and other water craft zone between flags. Do not swim here.
    • Green flag: Low hazard. Calm conditions
    • Yellow flag: Medium hazard. Be cautious. Moderate surf and/or currents
    • Red flag: High Hazard. Unsafe. Do not enter the water.
  • Always face to waves…..do not stand with your back to them.
  • Be aware of jellyfish and other dangerous sea life that may be in the water. Either carry vinegar with you or know where you can access a “Vinegar Station” (on some beaches in Thailand) to help treat jellyfish stings.
  • Do not swim near piers as the currents may be unpredictable and at risk of being hit by boats etc.

Waterparks:

  • Always read safety instructions and follow them. Follow instructions of staff.
  • Wear a life jacket if not a strong swimmer.
  • Always wear a helmet if required to.

In Thailand we have hot weather and enjoy “cooling off” in the water. Following the above guidelines with limit the risk of injury and death for you and your family.

ISB is committed to your child’s overall development, both educationally and health related. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact your healthcare provider or the ISB Health Clinic (nurse@isb.ac.th).

ARTIST STATEMENT:

I am a creator more than an artist. Everything around me is my inspiration. Bits, pieces, snippets, sounds, and feel all contribute as triggers, reactions, ideas, and results. My work comes as a product of where I am and what is at hand at the moment. Changing gears is a constant. I continually work on different types, formats and styles at the same time. Traveling around the world, taking the small roads, and seeking something new is the best source for my mind. Standing still or only making one kind of art is not an option.

This month-long residency has been generously sponsored by the ISB PTA.

We have several students who have severe allergic reactions to nuts and this can be from just touching an area which has had nuts on it. Without treatment these reactions may be fatal!

We ask all parents and visitors to the school to ensure that there are no nuts brought onto campus or on field trips.
