Take Away? เอากลับบ้าน?

We’ve launched disposable boxes/bowls and cutlery sets in the ISB cafeteria. This will allow you to take your favourite Epicure meals home or beyond the cafeteria.

When purchasing food in the Middle School and High School cafeteria, many staff members, parents and students at ISB take their lunch from the cafeteria to enjoy it in their classrooms or in common areas around campus. This is one of the many benefits that comes with ISB’s open and beautiful campus – many great breakfast and lunch spots! However, this practice makes it very hard for Epicure and our ISB Building and Grounds staff to locate and return all the plates, bowls, cups and cutlery to its rightful place. The cafeteria loses roughly 4000 pieces of cutlery out of the cafeteria each year on account of this. These กลับบ้าน (take away) meals also create unnecessary waste around campus.

Starting October 1st, ISB and Epicure introduced biodegradable plate/box takeaway sets (including cutlery) in an attempt to reduce these concerns, and other sanitary issues generated when food is taken away from the main cafeteria. The cost per set is Baht 15 and they can be requested as you order your food at the counter, when you grab your salad from the salad bar, or will be found at the checkouts.

There will be designated areas where cafeteria plastic plates and cutlery are allowed: in the main cafeteria, the staff room by the main cafeteria and the outdoor seatings areas between the cafeteria and Field D. The Grind will also be providing the Green Panther Green cups in these areas, and for take aways you will receive the plant-based plastic cups. (The plastic plates will continue to be used in the Elementary Cafeteria, where takeaway is not an option.)

In order to put our food waste to good, sustainable use, there will also be designated, red trash bins for the disposables and any food remaining in them, which will be taken daily off campus for composting.

You can also be the ultimate environmentalist and bring your own takeaway containers and avoid the cost while further protecting the environment.

Thank you for helping us to reduce our overall waste, be more efficient with our resources and keep our campus clean.

MAP assessment results are now available on PowerSchool

Dear Parents of Students in Grades 3-8 and Grade 10,

Earlier this year, students in grades 3 through 8 took the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment.  MAP is one of multiple assessment pieces that our teachers use to monitor student growth and determine next steps in learning.  Children do not all learn in the same way, so any standardized assessment needs to be viewed only in conjunction with a range of other learning data. We get the most accurate picture of a student’s progress by using a variety of learning evidence including everyday ongoing assessments, learning conversations with students, ongoing formative assessment (assessment that helps us design more appropriate subsequent learning experiences).

MAP also measures your child’s achievement level compared to other students who have taken this test, and measures academic growth over time in the areas of mathematics and reading.  However, the student sample is drawn from US public and private schools, not international schools. The test does not cover all academic skills, nor does it cover such areas as physical, artistic, or interpersonal skills. Parents will gain a more complete picture of student performance by looking at this test along side a variety of classroom work samples and other assessments over a period of time.

Your child’s MAP assessment results are now available on PowerSchool.  When you log in, you should see a link in the upper right corner where you can Download MAP Results.

We will have a parent meeting on Monday, November 5 at 1:30 to talk about standardized testing at ISB.  This will include information about MAP (given to students in grades 3-8) and the ISA (given to students in grades 3 5, 7, and 10).  We will meet in MPB 3. Your involvement in your child’s education is crucial. We look forward to seeing you on Nov. 5!

Sincerely,

Debi Caskey
Deputy Head of School for Learning

ISB Sport Coordinators – Creating Positive Change in Athletics

$

ISB introduced new Sport Coordinators this school year, and these inspired individuals have already helped facilitate significant growth and positive change within our programs. Borne from our annual review of the ISB Athletic and CAO program, and with the full support of our school leadership and the Strategic Improvement & Learning Committee of the board, these positions are being trialled with the aim of improving student learning and quality of experience for our athletes.

The Sport Coordinators work closely with the ISB Athletic Department, acting as champions and advocates for each of our thirteen pathway programs (IASAS sports). Our Sport Coordinators have already delivered a significant impact to our programs this year, generating a number of proposals for facility enhancements and helping to facilitate our Season One coaches’ professional development day.  Our Coordinators are identifying ways in which each sport can continue to raise its profile, grow in strength and opportunity, meet our ever-changing needs, and fulfill our vision and mission.

Other areas we’ve targeted this year include researching top-level competition, delivering enhanced training techniques, instilling mental toughness, providing more challenge and enrichment opportunities, and establishing better vertical alignment by sport, U11-Varsity. We are also brainstorming more ways to connect with and enrich our local community through camps, outreach programs, and events. Keep your eyes open for the upcoming BBSA coaches’ clinic for parent-volunteers, the Panthers’ Volleyball Academy, and more innovative ideas emerging from this fledgling program and these highly invested educator-coaches.

Our ISB Sport Coordinators are also here to help answer any sport specific questions you may have, and they are happy to help direct you to an appropriate opportunity or program for your son/daughter. Please feel free to reach out by email if you have any queries.

What is the ISB Pathways Career Fair?

$

0

The ISB Pathways Program aims to provide High School students with valuable work experience and guidance. We do this through internships, job shadowing, the career fair and visiting guest speakers.

The Career Fair brings professionals from our alumni, parent and the wider Bangkok community to join a panel discussion and a fair. The panel addresses student questions about how to choose the right path of career, how to approach career choices and opportunities, and gives our speakers a chance to share their personal story and their journey on their career path. The fair that follows gives students the opportunity to ask particular, more detailed questions to the visiting professionals about their job and industry.

We’re currently looking for parent speakers to join the panel and Pathways program for the next Career Fair on January 24th, from 10am to noon.

Should you be interested, please register here.
