Health Clinic: Sun Protection

Living in Bangkok we are in a tropical climate, with lots of sun. We all spend time in the sun no matter how hard we try and avoid it. At ISB, students play outside as well as having PE in the sun. With some students already starting swimming for PE we really need to think about limiting their exposure to harmful UV rays. This is a gentle reminder about the risks of sun exposure and how to prevent long term problems.

Excess sun exposure can cause immediate health concerns with sunburn and heat related illnesses as well as long term health issues such as skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation people who have 5 or more episodes of sunburn as a child increase their lifetime risk of melanoma (a type of skin cancer) by 80%.

We all need some sun exposure for our bodies to manufacture Vitamin D for healthy bones and immune system. We get adequate Vitamin D from 15-20 minutes of sun exposure a day. The problem is that overall our children are exposed to more than that. We can also supplement our Vitamin D with oral supplements or Vitamin D fortified products.

How do we limit our children’s sun exposure?

(Both at school and at home/whilst on holidays)

  1. Stay in the shade as much as possible especially between 10 am and 4 pm.
  2. Encourage children to wear a broad brimmed hat or cap. All ISB elementary school students need to wear a hat to play outside and for PE. Encourage your middle school and high school students to do the same. If children are wearing a cap apply sunscreen to neck and ears (see below). Consider rash guard/swim shirt for swimming sessions.
  3. Wear clothing that covers skin as much as possible. Wear clothing with a tight weave.
  4. Sunscreen. Need at least SPF15. Encourage children to apply before school, before PE and at recess/lunch if going to play in the sun. Reapply every 2 hours if in the sun or after swimming/excessive sweating. Apply sunscreen even when it is cloudy. Always check expiry date on your sunscreen.
  5. When possible wear sunglasses that provide 97-100% protection from UVA and UVB rays.

Treatment of Sunburn:

  1. Move out of sun as soon as sunburn is recognised.
  2. Give fluids.
  3. Simple analgesics such as ibuprofen can help with the pain.
  4. Topical agents such as cool compresses, moisturizing creams and aloe vera gels may help.
  5. Leave blisters intact. If they open, cover with petrolatum jelly and sterile dressing. Antibiotics may be required  if they get infected.
  6. Severe sunburn: seek medical advice as there is a risk of severe dehydration. Hospitalization may be required for severe sunburn.
  7. Ensure above preventative measures are taken to avoid recurrence.

ISB is committed to your child’s overall development, both educationally and health related. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact your healthcare provider or the ISB Health Clinic (nurse@isb.ac.th).

School Calendar for 2019-2020

The ISB Board of Trustees has approved the calendar for the 2019-2020 school year.  The team took into account many needs and preferences.  The main differences from this year are the later start time for the December holiday (creating better balance between first and second semesters) and the inclusion of a full week holiday in February.

Early Release days and Parent Teacher Conferences will be added and an updated calendar posted as soon as those are in place.

The team creating the drafts and sharing feedback included parents, students, teachers, and administrators.  They worked hard to come up with a great year that supports learning.  Many thanks to everyone who shared their time, ideas, and perspectives.

Expanding our Early Childhood Program

$

ISB is now enrolling children from 3 years old into the Early Childhood Program.

Research shows that children are more successful in school and beyond if they are provided with a strong foundation in the earliest years of their lives. For the past couple of years, ISB has been considering an expansion of the learning we offer to younger children so that we can provide them with the ISB standard of education at this fundamental time of their development. We are very excited to announce that from the 2019 – 2020 school year, we will now be taking this important step.

A decision was made at the November board meeting to offer admission to 3 year old children at ISB, beginning August 2019. We will be adding one section of students to our Pre-K/KG quad, and they’ll embark on the same journey of Reggio Emilia inspired discovery, creativity, collaboration and developmental learning that all our young panthers in the Early Childhood program enjoy. We will be renovating the playground and other supporting facilities to cater for this younger group of learners.

We believe that ISB can provide a strong foundation, which can lead to more success for learners throughout their school experience. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Our programs allow for personalized learning based on developmental readiness
  • Our innovative learning space allows for intentional centers with small groupings and collaboration with other age groups
  • We offer a safe and nurturing environment where curiosity and exploration are cultivated
  • We provide guided discovery and unstructured play both inside and outside of the classroom so that children can create and solve authentic challenges
  • Children are given the freedom to creatively choose much of their learning paths
  • We have the highest quality teachers in each classroom
  • There is collaboration with children of other age groups
  • We structure rich language experiences so that children develop in their oral expressions and vocabulary

Given that we are only adding one additional section, only a small number of 3 year old students will be able to join in the first year. Should you be interested in enrolling your little one, please email admissions@isb.ac.th for more information and to apply.

School Uniform: Thank you for your feedback

Thank you to those that gave feedback on the uniform samples displayed last week on campus.

We received valuable feedback that will help us to create the next round of samples for review. We have compiled the data collected and some key trends that came through were as follows:

  • Most of our community are in favour of keeping the design of our polo shirts the same or very similar. 3 solid colours, with a solid white option, and the same shirt cut and style.
  • Most of our community would like a dry fit option for material of the shirts and two clear preferences came through. However, given the variance of comments received, we will explore further options of fabric for the next round.

The first round of samples were created based on the answers given in the whole school survey sent early in the school year. Your feedback now given on these samples has helped us to refine our choices.

We understand that a change in uniform impacts our whole community and we will continue to ensure that we take into account all the thoughts and ideas of our parents, staff and students to ensure we reach an improved ISB school uniform.

We will have adjusted options for review in the coming months.
